현재 성수동은 ‘팝업의 성지’라 불릴 정도로 방문객 중심의 소비 공간으로 변모하고 있다.
팝업스토어의 인기는 임대료 상승을 가속화하고 있으며, 점차 대기업 중심으로 변화하면서 개성 있는 분위기가 희석되는 ‘문화 백화현상’이 나타나고 있다. 머지않아 성수 역시 다른 핫플레이스들과 마찬가지로 젠트리피케이션을 겪을 가능성이 높으며, 이는 성수의 활력을 유지하기 어렵게 만드는 주요 요인이 될 것이다.
성수가 계속해서 개성 있고 활력 넘치는 지역으로 남기 위해서는 소비 중심의 공간을 넘어 ‘문화생산 기지’로서의 역할을 수행하는 공간이 필요하다고 생각했다.
‘문화생산 기지’란 단순한 문화 소비가 아닌 새로운 콘텐츠와 가치를 창출하는 생산적인 공간을 의미하며, 이를 실현하기 위해서는 지역 주민과의 적극적인 연계가 필수적이다.
이에 따라 우리는 기존의 일시적인 방문객 중심 콘텐츠에서 벗어나, 지역 콘텐츠 제작, 지역 행사 및 축제 진행 등 지역 사회와 협업을 지속할 수 있는 뮤지컬 극장 기반의 문화복합시설을 제안한다. 이 공간은 공연 예술을 중심으로 창작과 생산이 공존하는 플랫폼 역할을 하며, 성수만의 고유한 문화를 만들어가는 중요한 거점이 될 것이다.
Seongsu-dong has rapidly transformed into a visitor-centered commercial district, often referred to as the “Mecca of Pop-ups.”
The popularity of pop-up stores has accelerated rent increases, leading to a shift toward large corporations and resulting in a phenomenon known as “cultural homogenization,” where the area’s unique character fades. Like other trendy hotspots, Seongsu is at risk of undergoing gentrification, which could ultimately make it difficult to sustain its vibrancy.
To ensure that Seongsu remains a dynamic and distinctive neighborhood, it is essential to establish a space that goes beyond mere cultural consumption and serves as a “cultural production hub.”
This concept emphasizes the creation of new content and cultural value rather than passive consumption, and its realization requires active engagement with the local community.
To achieve this, we propose a musical theater-based cultural complex that moves away from short-lived, visitor-centric content and instead fosters long-term collaboration with the community through local content production, events, and festivals. This space will act as a platform where creativity and production coexist, ultimately shaping and preserving Seongsu’s unique cultural identity.
